UK wide debating

On Saturday 28th September two S3 pupils, Emma Bell and Ruby Ferguson, travelled to Newcastle to take part in the Northern Juniors Debating Competition at the Royal Grammar School of Newcastle.  This is the only juniors competition open to the whole UK.

They debated through three rounds where they get the topic and then just fifteen minutes to prepare their arguments, with no assistance from teachers or coaches. The girls were unlucky to come 3rd out of 4 in their first debate, behind a team from the Grammar School of Leeds and Westminster School. They bounced back well to place 1st in their next debate, defeating teams from King Edward VI school, RGS, and the High School of Dundee. They then placed 1st in their third debate, defeating teams from Leeds Grammar, Westminster College, and Bristol Grammar School.

This led to them breaking to the grand final to face off against team from St Paul's School for Girls, Westminster and Newcastle High School for Girls. They were debating in the pretty amazing main hall of RGS, and despite being incredibly nervous, the girls both delivered fantastic speeches.  The judges awarded the overall victory to Westminster, and the team from Broxburn Academy placed 2nd place.  This is an amazing achievement for the team who have done themselves and the school proud.

The girls were fantastic ambassadors for the school - and were complimented by numerous judges and coaches on their intelligence, maturity and confidence
